A Prayer for the Commencement of a School Year

books, globe, open book, pen

O Gracious God, Font of Eternal Wisdom, we bid Your blessing on all schools, colleges, and universities, that they may flow with Your living waters of the delight in new discovery and of the deepest learning. Embolden all students with a hunger and thirst for knowledge and empower all teachers, faculty members, and administrators to prepare and sustain all educational environments that they may be households of faithful scholarship and havens of fruitful security. All this we ask for the sake of Your Love, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

  1. Paul,
Thank you so much for this prayer!! The class I’ll be teaching doesn’t start until mid-October but I’m already praying for all the students heading back to class! I’ll continue to research and develop the best lessons and case studies to ensure my students are successful both in class and their professional lives. I love to teach and pray that all students will love all of the amazing things they will learn this year!! May all students and teachers be safe and happy this school year!
    Much love!

  2. I echo your prayers, Paul and Loretta. I have started believing that schools are, or should be, sacred places and that teaching and learning are sacred acts on which the future of humanity and the earth largely depend. May we hold our schools close to our hearts and take our responsibilities to them seriously. May we encourage and honor both teachers and students by seeing to it that they have what they need to do the work they need to do.

    Love,

    Karen

  3. Loretta, I always think of you and your vocation as a teacher/instructor, and, in my remembrance, pray you and your students well.

And, Karen, as one who comes from a family of generations of teachers across the spectrum of classroom grades and settings, I’ve long and oft lamented how oft poorly and in many locales, in my view, we, in America (for I seek to speak not about other countries) honor our teachers with the compensation and other practical amenities they deserve, your words, especially regarding teachers (though I, too, pray for all of our students), “that they have what they need to do the work they need to do,” ring true and register deeply within me.

Of all the words of this prayer, which I wrote and recited this past Sunday during our morning worship at Epiphany Episcopal Church, Laurens, SC, that I most lament, given that, in the light and shadow of forces of evil that reside and act within the fabric of our common life, it occurred to me at all, are these: “…to prepare and sustain all educational environments that they may be…havens of fruitful security…” May it be so.

    Love
