Note: As a personal, spiritual discipline, reviving my practice in the Lenten season of 2017, I revise the prayers I wrote then for each of the forty days of this Lent; each petition focusing on a theme, a concern weighing on my mind and heart or a care of my soul and spirit.

On imago Dei…
O God, You created us in Your image. Though an eternity of human contemplation cannot reveal all that this means, three things I believe I know:
You are wholly Holy; utterly “Other” than I…
Thus, I cannot (ever) comprehend the Sovereign Majesty and the Sacred Mystery of the workings of Your Mind…
Thus, I, even to think of You, must have in mind my imago Dei, my image of You.
O God, by the Illumination of Your Holy Spirit, unceasingly, increasingly unveil to me the difference between Who You are and my thought of You that I may seek You aright.
Amen.
Paul, for me I think God is unveiling who I am so I may see him more clearly!

Loretta, your comment, for me, is intriguing. Quite intriguing.
Foremost, I will await with anticipation what, indeed, who God unveils you to be for you! Now, for this instant moment, this is where your comment takes me…
As I think about the imago Dei (the image of God), theologically and existentially, I think, it always runs in two directions simultaneously. First, God’s Image in which God creates us (and we never can exhaust our examination and understanding of what that means!). Second, God’s image that we imagine in order to conceptualize for our human selves and to communication to and with other humans our understandings of (and confusions/misunderstandings about!) God.
Now, the more I contemplate this, the more I see that, for me, it is not possible for me, as human, to have a view, an image of God that is not influenced (colored, tainted!) by my human limitations of perception and understanding. To put this another way, my view or image of God always has an earthbound (not heavenly, indeed, unheavenly, even more, humanly sinful) element. Therefore, I prayed and pray that God reveal, unveil unto me the difference between Who God is and who I perceive God to be that I might seek God aright.
Now, as I come full circle back to your comment, I wonder… Can it be that as God reveals unto you more and more of who you are and who you are becoming (as I have grown fond of saying – for example – in my last two sermons as the phrase popped up in my oration quite unconsciously) “in God” that God also is revealing, unveiling more and more to you Who God is? Hmmm, I think, I believe so!
And, if that is so, is it possible that who you believe God is revealing, unveiling unto you is your image of your best self, which is precisely where God, Who is Perfect Being, is leading and guiding us all, in the Holy Spirit, to be and to become? Yes, I think, I believe so!
So, my dear sister, I come full circle (again!) to where I began: I await with anticipation what, indeed, who God unveils you to be for you!
Love,
Paul

Thanks for this Paul! Yes!! That sermon!! As I wrote to you & Gayle this morning, the sermons from Sunday were incredible! I listened to yours and hers several times. I too will wait to see who God unveils me to be! I’ll let you know for sure!
